While working on your computer, you might start to experience blurred vision, headaches, and eye twitching. What you are likely experiencing is computer eye strain. Although walking away from the computer can help, there are ways you can reduce the likelihood of experiencing eye strain and still use your computer.
Get an Eye Examination
Ideally, you should have an annual eye exam. However, you should see your eye doctor for another examination if you are experiencing the symptoms of computer eye strain. Your doctor will need to eliminate the possibility of another eye condition causing your symptoms. He or she can also prescribe computer eyeglasses.
Computer eyeglasses are different than regular glasses. If you are sitting the recommended distance from your computer's monitor, your eyes can sometimes struggle to focus. The images and words can seem as if they are in the distance. The glasses work to magnify what you are seeing on the screen.
By magnifying the screen, you do not have to lean forward or strain to see. At the same time, the glasses work to reduce the glare that is sometimes present. The glare can worsen the strain on your eyes and even impact overall visual health.
Check Your Monitor and Its Settings
Even with the computer glasses on, you need to make sure your computer's position and settings are correct to avoid stain to your eyes. The right position will ensure you are not too close and is bright enough to comfortably see.
When you are sitting in your chair, the monitor should be an arm's length away from you. The top of the screen needs to be level with your eyes. You should also tilt the monitor slightly to help with your viewing of the screen.
When it comes to your settings, you need to find a balance between the brightness of your screen and the area around it. If the brightness is uneven, eye strain will result. Try to eliminate any contrast between the area around the monitor and the screen. Periodically throughout the day, you will need to adjust the brightness.
In addition to these steps, consider increasing the size of the font. The text needs to be about two times larger than the smallest text that you can comfortably read on the screen.
